Kolkata weather update: If you've been enjoying the relatively mild weather this April, it’s time to brace yourself. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a rising heat trend in Kolkata and across South Bengal, with temperatures expected to soar over the next few days.

According to the latest Kolkata weather forecast, the day temperature in Alipore is projected to climb to 37°C by April 23, while humid nights and dry westerly winds will make conditions even more uncomfortable for city dwellers.

Kolkata Temperature to Touch 37°C: What the Met Office Says

A senior official from the Met Office in Alipore confirmed that the mercury is steadily rising. While Kolkata saw a maximum temperature of 35°C on Sunday, a noticeable jump is expected in the coming days.

“By April 23, the temperature in Alipore is likely to reach 37 degrees Celsius. Dum Dum and adjoining regions could be even hotter,” said the official.

Meanwhile, minimum temperatures are holding around 28°C, which is two degrees above normal, leading to sweaty, restless nights.

West Bengal Weather Forecast: Dry & Hot Conditions in Sight

Not just Kolkata, but parts of western districts of West Bengal could see the temperature cross 40°C, putting these areas under a possible heatwave warning. The IMD’s weekly forecast predicts dry weather across South Bengal till April 26, with no major rainfall expected to bring relief.

RealFeel Temperature Hits 42°C in Kolkata

Though the thermometer read 35°C around 1:30 PM on Sunday, the high humidity levels spiked the RealFeeltemperature to a staggering 42°C, making even brief outings extremely exhausting.

The minimum relative humidity stood at 61%, which means that even during the driest parts of the day, excessive sweating and discomfort were unavoidable.

“There may be a slight drop in humidity in the coming days, but night-time moisture levels will remain high, keeping the atmosphere sticky and unbearable,” added the Met official.

Thunderstorms Bring Brief Relief in North & South Bengal

Last week, north and south Bengal experienced isolated thunderstorms, which temporarily brought down the heat. On Thursday, parts of Kolkata recorded up to 50mm of rain, providing brief relief from the scorching sun. However, the clear skies have since returned, and the forecast for the coming week points to uninterrupted sunshine and dry spells.

Some parts of northern Kolkata received light showers on Friday, but not enough to make a lasting impact on the rising temperatures.

Comparing April 2025 to Past Years: A Temporary Respite Ends

April 2025, until now, had been relatively comfortable, especially compared to recent years. In April 2024, the city saw multiple days where the mercury breached 40°C, accompanied by intense heatwave conditions.

However, the comfort of early April is quickly giving way to intense heat and humid conditions, a pattern that Kolkata residents are all too familiar with.

Brigade Rally Highlights the Heat Impact

The scorching heat didn’t deter political activity on Sunday. During a Left Front rally at the Brigade Parade Grounds, hundreds braved the sun. However, the combination of rising humidity and strong sunlight made outdoor participation exhausting.

Vendors selling lemonade, water bottles, and ice cream saw a sudden surge in business as the crowd looked for ways to stay cool.

Expert Advice: How to Stay Safe During Kolkata's Heatwave

With temperatures rising and humidity remaining high, health experts recommend the following precautions:

  • Stay hydrated at all times

  • Avoid outdoor activity during peak hours (12 PM – 4 PM)

  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing

  • Use sunscreen and carry an umbrella or cap

  • Eat light meals and avoid oily food

  • Watch for heatstroke symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and nausea

What Lies Ahead: Extended Heat Spell Likely in South Bengal

As per the extended weather outlook, no major rainfall activity is expected in South Bengal until April 26. With the sun blazing and westerly winds prevailing, both day and night temperatures are expected to remain above seasonal averages.

Residents of Kolkata and adjoining districts are advised to monitor Met Office alerts, stay indoors when possible, and prepare for an intense summer ahead.

Final Thoughts: Kolkata’s Summer Has Truly Arrived

With the heat index climbing and the humidity intensifying, April’s last leg is shaping up to be a hot and sticky affairin Kolkata. While the city has been spared the early heatwaves this year, the coming week promises no such mercy.

Stay indoors, stay hydrated, and stay safe. The worst of the summer might just be around the corner.
